Staff augmentation vs dedicated teams: which is right for you?
The two most popular engagement models have very different cost structures, commitment levels, and outcomes. Here's how to choose.
Zelvante Team
Engineering
Staff augmentation and dedicated teams are the two most common engagement models for software development. Both work — but for different companies at different stages. Here's the honest comparison.
Staff augmentation
You hire 1-5 engineers who join your existing team. You manage them directly. They use your stack, your processes, your tools. It's flexible — scale up or down monthly.
- Best for: Companies with existing teams and tech leads who can manage external engineers
- Cost: $8K-18K/month per engineer
- Flexibility: High (scale up/down monthly)
- Management overhead: You manage them
- Risk: If the engineer leaves, you lose context
Dedicated teams
You hire a full squad — PM, tech lead, engineers, QA — managed by the firm. They deliver against your roadmap. It's more structured and requires less management from you.
- Best for: Companies without a tech lead, or who want to outsource delivery entirely
- Cost: $45K-80K/month for a 5-person squad
- Flexibility: Medium (scale with 30-day notice)
- Management overhead: Low (firm handles it)
- Risk: Lower (firm manages continuity and quality)
Rule of thumb: If you have a CTO or VP Engineering who can manage external engineers, choose staff augmentation. If you don't, choose a dedicated team.
The hybrid model
Many companies start with staff augmentation and graduate to a dedicated team once their roadmap is clear. At Zelvante, we make this transition seamless — the same engineers who were augmenting your team become the core of your dedicated squad.
